Get fit with Netball and stay safe

For most women, netball is something they played at school and either loved or hated. However, a significant number of women are coming back to the game in later years, as a way of getting fit and as part of their social life. Here is a look at how you can get involved.

According to the BBC, in August 2015 England’s netball team won bronze in the Netball World Cup in a tournament that was won by the hosts Australia in front of a record-breaking crowd. This shows how popular the sport is, and hopefully the England team’s performance has encouraged and inspired the younger generation, and maybe the not so young, to get involved in the sport.

How to Get Involved

There has recently been a campaign called ‘This Girl Can’ aiming to get more women into sport. In June 2015 England Netball reported that the latest Active Sport Survey from Sport England showed an increase in the number of people aged 16 and over who are playing netball every week, which shows the campaign is working.  It probably helps that with so many homes having more than one television set and the popularity of sport and youth having many devices to watch it on.  All you have to do is get a TV Aerial Installation Cheltenham company from sites like  steveunettaerials.co.uk/services/tv-aerials-repair-and-installation-cheltenham/. Many areas have a league, with a large number of towns having teams that you can join. It is a great opportunity to meet like-minded women and get fit whilst also having a lot of fun. While not everyone will be at the same standard as the England netball team, you will need to be able to demonstrate some ability to play as well as have lots of enthusiasm.

What You Need

The equipment you need to play netball is minimal – a pair of trainers, shorts and a t-shirt for training initially. If you are playing for a team that participates in a league, then the team probably have kit that you would need to purchase for taking part in competitive matches.

Training will probably take place once a week, with matches also played once a week during the season, which tends to be in the summer months.  During training you may be required to do netball drills in order to practise playing in your chosen position.
