Three Spring Blooms to Look for in March in the UK

March is the month where spring really starts to become noticeable. You may have noticed the birdsong getting louder in the mornings, and of course we are enjoying longer hours of daylight now, and with the clocks going forward at the end of the month we know that winter is truly over and we have the spring and summer to look forward to.

One of the main signs of spring that we can also look out for in March is the array of plant life that is starting to bloom out in the countryside. You might be thinking about buying your mum a beautiful bouquet for mothers day from somewhere like this florist Tewkesbury based company flowershedtewkesbury.co.uk/ but the natural world is also putting on its own floral display at this time of the year. Here are some of the flowers to see in March…

Daffodils – Probably the most popular and easily recognisable flower of the time of year and heralding the start of spring with their jolly and bright appearance, the swathe of daffodils that inspired Wordsworth’s famous poem are a popular sight to behold in March. The lake district is a great place to visit if you want to see daffodils, as is the daffodil way walk in Gloucestershire.

Blackthorn – This native tree is also putting on a show now and unlike the similar hawthorn, blackthorn produces its white flowers before it produces leaves, so look at the hedgerows to see the swathes of white blossom on the bare spiky twigs.

The dark bark of the tree that is most commonly found as a hedgerow shrub gives it its name and you must take care when handling it as the sharp thorns can cause problems if you get caught by them.

Wood Anemone – These delicate little white flowers can only be found in ancient woodland. They are slow to grow and spread, so therefore are a symbol that the woodland you are in has been around a long time. If you are looking for these flowers, go on a dry day as they close up when it rains. There are many legends and tales about the anemone, including the tale that they grew in the place where Aphrodite’s tears fell when grieving her lover.
