Audi Steering Rack Leak Signs

A leaking steering rack is a problem that is worth solving early before low fluid pressure turns a minor seal failure into a costly repair job. Here you can find some typical signs of a leaking steering rack.

Fluid Puddles Beneath the Front Axle

Look for power steering fluid on the ground where your car has been parked. Power steering fluid is a pale amber or reddish liquid, and it will leave a slightly oily patch on surfaces it comes into contact with. A small amount of fluid on the ground from a single spot could mean that you have a leak from somewhere else in your car’s system, but a patch of fluid in the same place every time you look always points to the steering rack.

Oily Residue on the Rack or Gaiters

Check the rack for any signs of oil leaking. The rubber gaiters at each end of the rack should be dry and smooth. If they look greasy, cracked or dirty stuck to rubber that has been wet then there is a leak from the rack. Also check the metal rack for any greasy or sticky patches.

Low or Discoloured Reservoir Fluid

Find the Power Steering Reservoir. Typically this is a small transparent plastic reservoir with a dipstick in it with marks on it for min and max levels. Check the level of the fluid. The fluid in the reservoir should be fairly clear or pale in colour. If the level is low, or if the fluid appears dark brown in colour, or even smells of burnt oil, then the system is leaking, or worse, running with degraded fluid. See also Audi Steering Racks.

Heavy or Inconsistent Steering Feel

A steering rack is a hydraulic powered system that assists in the steering of your vehicle. Due to the nature of the system, a loss of power steering fluid will result in increased resistance when turning the steering wheel. This is particularly noticeable at low speeds when maneuvering in parking lots, around corners, and when performing turns at slow speeds. Some audi models have been known to have slight variation in steering resistance from lock to lock.

Burning Smell When the Car Is Warm

A leak in the steering rack can burn off as it runs down hot parts of the exhaust system. The smell is sharp and acrid, like hot oil but slightly different from regular engine oil. It is noticeable straight away if you smell it after a short run, check underneath the steering rack while the car is cool.

By identifying a leak early on you can save yourself from a large repair bill by having to complete a larger repair as a result of low fluid pressure due to the initial seal failure. Take a few minutes every few weeks to check your car for signs of leaks.
