The county of Gloucestershire has supplied its fair share of famous faces down through the years. It is a quiet, tranquil place to be born into and spend your formative years. - Simon Pegg, born in Brockworth, Gloucester, has had a stellar career seeing him leave the sleepy streets of this Gloucester suburb to the bright lights of Hollywood. Stellar is a well-chosen word as his latest role has seen him playing Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise, Montgomery Scott. Before that, he carved out a career in television on landmark comedy shows like Big Train. His most significant break was the Channel Four series Spaced that he co-wrote. Now he rubs shoulders with the likes of Tom Cruise, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
- Daisy May Cooper, from Cirencester. This lady shot to fame with her brother in the award-winning comedy show “This Country”. Focusing on the village and small-town life in the Cotswolds of the rural poor, it moved away from the usual horse riding and “Aga Saga “ that are the standard fare. Now a permanent host on the resurrected Never Mind the Buzzcocks and a role on the Sky TV high budget comedy-drama Avenue 5 (one episode of which she co-wrote).
- Gustav Holst. The composers of many classic pieces, but his best-known work is that of the Planet suite. Born in Cheltenham is home is a museum dedicated to commemorating his life’s work.
- Brian Jones. Also born in Cheltenham, Jones was one of the founding members of The Rolling Stones along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. He is buried in the Cheltenham crematorium.
- J.K Rowling. The famous author of the Harry Potter series was born in the small town of Yate. She used Gloucester Cathedral as a basis for Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was no surprise that the Catherdal was used as in one of its filming locations.
- Laurie Lee. The famous author of Cider with Rosie and many autobiographical works, he was born in the village of Slad, nestled in the Cotswold foothills. His rich storytelling and poetry generated many fans and gave a view of country life not record before.
- Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards. Although he was utterly unsuccessful in his Winter Olympic career, Michael Edwards received much attention and fame for showing true Olympic spirit and taking part even though a lack of funding and his inability at the sport were against him. It is thought that he generated more news coverage and interest in Ski jumping than the actual winner of the event.
